Like flat earth stated before, it's strong points are moving atmospheric pads, plus it has strong orchestral strings, usable drums, progammable dual arpeggiator, 8 PCM Expansion slots, plus that awesome MOSS DSP Board. The Triton Rack has a different sound pallette altogether and of course that infamous Korg signature sound. I only upgraded to the Fantom XR because it has a larger Wave ROM, better converters, re-worked effects, + 6 SRX slots. Plus not to mention it reads Akai/Roland sample cds, so there really is no weak points in the sound department, since it's so darn flexible. Then on top of this, it's backwards compatible with the older Roland JV/XP synths. The XV5080 has some very cool bread & butter sounds, especially when expanded with those SRX Boards, plus those classic Roland synth tones. Of course you're asking about the XV5080, which I've owned and sold because of upgrading. This is because there are too many other variables that may influence the processing environment, including differences in motherboard design and the particular combination of other devices involved.I have both a loaded Fantom XR & Triton Rack.

* Although Roland has tested numerous configurations, and has determined that on average, a computer system similar to that described above will permit normal operation of the SRX PIANO 2 Software Synthesizer, Roland cannot guarantee that a given computer can be used satisfactorily with the SRX PIANO 2 Software Synthesizer based solely on the fact that it meets the above requirements.

The SRX software synthesizer plug-ins bring the well-loved sounds of Roland’s legacy SRX and SR-JV80 wave expansion boards to your modern music production workflow. Digital Circuit Behavior (DCB) technology reproduces every nuance and detail, fusing the original sample ROM with advanced behavior modeling that replicates the hardware’s digital components and circuitry. Instruments like the JV-1080, XP-80, XV-5080, and numerous others offered the ability to expand their sounds with user-installable expansion boards, each loaded with a specialized sampled waveform set for different styles and genres.Īfter debuting the concept in 1992 with the JV-80 synth, Roland’s wave expansion board releases eventually grew to over 30 titles across two formats and multiple generations of supported instruments. For two-plus decades, SRX and SR-JV80 boards were an everyday staple for the world’s top producers, composers, and performers, and their sounds have been heard in countless hit songs, film soundtracks, and all types of media. It will cover the same sonic ground as the JD-990 and JV-2080 in 1 unit. It also has roughly 3-4x the 'real world' polyphony of the JD-990. Despite that, I would recommend a XV-5080 for the slew of waveforms and expansion it has. With its big screen, the on-board editing is quick and easy, especially thanks to the intuitive button layout. I own a JD-990 w/Vintage Synth expansion.
